Education

Peder Monsted was born in 1859 in Grenaa, a port town on the Kattegat on the Djursland peninsula in Jutland, Denmark. He begins his artistic training at the art school in Aarhus. From 1875-79 he studied at the Copenhagen Art Academy with Johan Frederik Vermehren, Julius Exner and Niels Simonsen. At times he was at the painting school of Peter Severin Krøyer. During the winter of 1882/83 Monsted studied with William Adolphe Bouguereau in Paris.

Trips

In the following years Mönsted traveled almost continuously: In Italy he visited Rome, Capri, Venice, Lake Garda and Ravello, among others. In France he travels to Paris and in Monaco to Monte Carlo. In winter he frequently visits the Swiss Engadine. In 1889 he traveled to Algeria. Three years later he follows the invitation of the Greek king to Greece. Egypt is also becoming a travel destination. His numerous study trips make his oeuvre exciting and varied.

Motifs and painting

Peder Mønsted mainly painted landscapes. He became famous for his almost photo-realistic depictions of forests, clearings and forest streams in his Scandinavian homeland. He followed a recurring scheme of deserted landscapes crossed by a lake or a stream. The reflections on the water appear deceptively real. People are mostly used as staffage figures when it is not a portrait.

Museums and collections

Peder Mønsted’s paintings are found in museums and private collections around the world. His works were particularly popular with the European nobility as well as with English and American collectors. With the rediscovery of Scandinavian painting a few years ago, Mönsted’s pictures have again moved more into the focus of international collectors.
