The Brücke

The “Brücke” painters turned away from the academically perfect rendering of nature: They simplified the shapes and picture surfaces and often only hinted at what was depicted.

Sonderbund 1912

The highlight of 1912 was participation in the Cologne Sonderbund exhibition. During this time he made the acquaintance of numerous artists such as Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Christian Rohlfs, Lyonel Feininger, August Macke and Franz Marc.

Exhibitions

After the “Brücke” was dissolved, Heckel’s first solo exhibition took place at Fritz Gurlitt’s in Berlin in 1913. In 1955 the artist took part in “documenta I” in Kassel.

Honors

In 1956 he received the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, in 1957 the Art Prize of the City of Berlin, in 1961 the Art Prize of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and in 1967 the “Orden pour la Mérite”.
