Born in the North of France, Léon Gérard Crépy (1872 Lille - Unknown) soon moved to Paris where he started his artistic education as pupil of the renownend historical and portrait artist Léon Bonnard. Later on Crépy successfully sold his portraits and was shown in exhibitions in France, Belgium and Germany.

The Sphinx made a deep impression on many travelers to Egypt - it remains the surviving monument of a once mighty culture and dynasty. Crépy was spellbound by this apparition, too, and painted the half-human half-lion being in this small sketch.
