Around 1860 Julius Rollmann visited the Bavarian mountains, Munich and northern Italy several times. During one of these trips, he found the inspiration for the work 'Foothills of the Alps'. The warm, shimmering air transforms the landscape in a wonderful, summery atmosphere. The small village and the grazing animals might seem irrelevant at first, yet they are the narrative characters of the painting.
