The work Spring Day at the forest creek near Sæby impresses with its precise painting style and its elongated format, which surprises as a panorama view of the motif of a forest scene. Mönsted manages to create an exciting scene. In the center, a forest stream flows leisurely through a deciduous forest. Since the trees are just beginning to bear the first leaves, the light falls unhindered to the forest floor. The red-brown foliage of last year is still lying on the mossy ground, while whole colonies of white anemones cover the well-lit places and herald spring. On the left, an ascending path leads through the forest and enhances the depth effect, which Mönsted skillfully creates by staggering the exact elaboration towards the viewer. The excellent choice of color, which tames the light on the canvas, creates the almost tangible impression of a warm spring day.
