In art history, Max Clarenbach is one of the most important figures of the Rhenish painting after the turn of the century. As a member of the Special Federal, together with other painters of the Düsseldorf Academy such as Walter Ophey, Clarenbach tried to connect German landscape painting with the French Impressionists.
