Franz Richard Unterberger was the son of the Innsbruck art dealer Franz Unterberger and studied since 1853 at the Munich Academy. From there he went to the Düsseldorf Academy, where he soon closely joined to the brothers Achenbach and 1860 traveled with Andreas Achenbach to Norway. On this trip many landscape plants that successfully exhibited Unterberger in Innsbruck, Vienna and Dusseldorf emerged. Throughout his artistic career, he was also represented at international exhibitions in Munich and in Brussels, Paris and London. During his lifetime, his works were very popular, so his paintings were often sold off by exhibits.
