Information about the artist

Herman Saftleven was a Dutch painter who was initially a student of his father, the painter and art dealer Herman Saftleven. In 1632 he moved to Utrecht, which he never left except for several trips to the Rhine and a longer stay in Elberfeld. He became particularly known for his fantasy and Italian landscapes, which he specialized in over time. After his second trip to the Rhine in 1651, Saftleven preferred panoramic fantasy landscapes and topographical river landscapes with rocky and hilly shores.
