Ludwig Munthe

Munthe, Ludwig

1841 Aaro (Sundal) ‐ 1896 Dusseldorf

Information about the artist

Before moving to Düsseldorf, Ludwig Munthe was a student of F. W. Schiertz in Bergen. Although he studied for a few semesters at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1861, he then decided to continue his self-taught training and came under the lasting influence of the Barbizon School, which he had probably met on several trips to France, but his vita could not be proven. His autumn and winter landscapes in the glow of the low-lying sun have given Munthe a reputation as a lyrical mood painter under the influence of Daubigny in contemporary art criticism.
